Since 2013, Emily has been a program director with Santa Monica music education nonprofit Elemental Music.

After directing Elemental Music’s Prelude Program for beginning strings for 8 seasons, she moves into a new role in the 2021–22 season as Chamber Music Institute Director. Emily is excited to bring her passion for chamber music to westside students in this new program. Other teaching roles for Elemental Music include coaching weekly for the Elemental Strings program and giving lessons in the Bergmann Project.

Emily wears many hats in Elemental Music, where she is also the Marketing & Communications Director and a grant writer for the organization.

 

Emily frequently coaches local school ensembles and offers educational workshops on a variety of topics.

She has also been a string coach with the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District since 2013, teaching sectionals and small group work in elementary and middle schools.

Emily has also prepared and presented workshops on a number of topics including

  • Non-traditional notation

  • Women in music

  • Writing for string quartet

  • learning and performing new and experimental music with young musicians, using pieces including Thirteen Changes (Pauline Oliveros), In C (Terry Riley), Clapping Music (Steve Reich), and Paper Piece (Ben Patterson)
